Dr. Michael J. Pensak is a fellowship-trained hand and upper extremity surgeon and the newest physician to join Ocean Orthopedic Associates. He graduated cum laude from Cornell University and attended medical school at SUNY Downstate Medical Center. He completed his orthopedic residency training at University of Connecticut and a hand and upper extremity fellowship at the University of Colorado.

Dr. Pensak was the first UConn orthopaedic surgery resident selected to complete a dedicated year of basic science research during his training. Under the mentorship of Dr. Jay R. Lieberman, an internationally renowned expert in total joint replacement and federally funded researcher, Dr. Pensak concentrated on investigating various bone graft substitutes and the application of gene therapy to help heal critical sized bone defects. His research has received several awards and has been presented at numerous national and regional conferences. He has published numerous scientific articles in several peer-reviewed journals.

Most recently, Dr. Pensak completed a hand and upper extremity fellowship at the University of Colorado under the leadership of Dr. Frank Scott. Dr. Pensak’s clinical focus is on the treatment of a wide variety of hand, wrist and elbow conditions including compression neuropathies, fractures/dislocations, tendon injuries, nerve injuries and arthritis.
